Applying to College

Applying to College

1. How do I apply to college?

The Ontario College Application System is a central agency that processes college applications. You can apply online at ontariocolleges.ca starting in October. No PIN numbers are required; instead you use your Ontario Education Number when you apply. OEN is found on both your timetable and report card.

2. How can I research programs?

The ontariocolleges.ca website outlines all programs at all colleges in Ontario. Also you can use the Find a Program Guide to explore a wide variety of programs including the trades, diploma requirements and collaborative degree programs.

3. When do I need to apply?

For programs beginning in the Fall, the equal consideration date is February 1st. After February 1st, the colleges consider applications on a first-come, first-served basis. Many colleges offer programs that start at other times during the year.

4. What are the costs?

There is an application fee of $95. You may select up to five programs with no more than three program choices at any one college.

5. What else can I do to prepare for the application process?

Come by guidance and look at the college course calendars. These calendars and guides give specific information on each program of study. It is wise to research your programs of interest to learn about admission requirements, first year courses, highly competitive programs, articulation agreements and campus information. Also, attend the college information sessions at lunch and after school and visit the college by attending the college open house, or by calling to arrange a tour. Be proactive and make informed decisions.

6. How do I apply to an out-of-province college?

You will need to go to the specific college’s website and find the application process for out-of-province students. Often you will need to send them a copy of your transcript at a few different points during the school year. These can be ordered (free of charge while you are a student here) from guidance. You will have to pay an application fee to the college.

7. How soon will I receive a response from a college?

Offers of admission will be released by the colleges anytime after February 1st. Offers will continue to be issued until programs are filled or wait-lists are established.

8. How can I get help to pay for my college education?

You may be eligible to receive financial assistance from OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program).
