WHS has the distinction of being the only school in the Ottawa-area to offer this program.

This two-year program, starting in Grade 11, is offered to students who are considering a career in any number of areas such a physiotherapy, policing, medical careers, teaching, coaching, sport and recreation management or personal training.

The Sports Performance SHSM is tailored to complement a student’s academic pathway, which means no change to their regular timetable is required. Students will choose courses from a bundle of credits that are related to the Sports Sector. Within some of the core courses, there will be a SHSM component. For example, in a senior English course, SHSM students will select a summative topic that links to Sports Performance. SHSM students will also complete a two credit Co-operative Education placement from which they will gain valuable career exploration and experience.  If a two-credit Co-op does not fit into the selected day schedule, there are opportunities to complete this requirement through Continuing Education’s Night or Summer Program. Our guidance counsellors will help students make arrangements for Co-op.

In addition to these courses, students will participate in Career Exploration and Experiential Learning activities, which usually occur during the regular school day. Also, several valuable and mandatory certifications are also offered to participants, including First Aid, CPR, AED, GPS certification, WHMIS training, Athletic taping and wrapping (Level 1 and 2), and Level 1 Coaching Theory Certification. These are offered at no cost to the students and will be an asset no matter what career path the student pursues.

Each student who completes the program will graduate with a SHSM Red Seal embossed on the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. This sets students apart from other Ontario graduates and is recognized by universities and colleges.  More information about SHSM programs can be located on the Ontario Ministry of Education website.
